Watched this one on Tubi.
You may have noticed I’ve stopped putting service names in the titles of these headlines. Since more companies are branching out their movies into other streamers and films are flipping around more than usual, I’ve decided to do away with categorizing things by service. Instead I’m going to categorize my reviews by year and just do away with the service stuff altogether. Except Hood Tubi which will always be Hood Tubi. I’m sure only I care.
Eye For An Eye: The Blind Swordsman is a 2022 Chinese Wuxia movie and the directorial debut of Bingjia Yang. He has since directed Fight Against Evil 2 (2023) and this year has Mu zhong wu ren 2, so clearly he’s been relegated to sequels. Well I have four more movies I need to watch. The film stars Miao Xie as Cheng Xiazi, aka Blind Cheng. You may not recognize Miao Xie by name, but back in the 90s his child form starred in a couple films alongside Jet Li and Chow Yun Fat.

Blind Cheng is your normal blind swordsman in ancient China; he goes around with his sword and his horse, righting wrongs, whooping ass, and taking name. He is a ghostkiller, a bounty hunter who tracks down dangerous wanted criminals. Cheng is taking on bounties to gradually earn money to give to a guy who says he can totally cure Cheng’s blindness. After he discovers a murder of innocent people at a wedding party, Cheng goes off in search of justice. With the end of his sword if necessary.
Eye For An Eye is a fantastic movie. It’s not groundbreaking by any measure, but I never get tired of a good blind swordsman story. None of the cast has filled out IMDB profiles, which isn’t surprising, but it’s hard to find a loose thread in the bunch. I especially liked Hao Xiang as Yuwen Ying, a formidable adversary for Cheng to eventually take on head to head. And of course this is a Chinese Wuxia film so all the women are gorgeous.

I don’t have a lot to say about this movie because there’s nothing surprising of very different here from other Wuxia films. The cinematography is fantastic, the camera work is great, and the set decorations as well as a big fight scene in the middle of a heavy snowstorm come together to make for a fantastic film. Check it out for free on that Tubi service while it’s still there.
