That’s the sixth Fast & Furious. (Spoilers)
I love the idea of Fast & Furious, the world does feel like a western anime sometimes. And I say that in the sense that anime loves creating versions of earth that are just obsessed with one particular thing. Like if the anime is about tennis the story will be about the protagonist being accepted to the prestigious tennis academy where students learn nothing but tennis to prepare for a world where even the president’s bodyguards use tennis, but eventually he’ll use his skills to defeat the bad guy who is going to take over Japan and then the planet, and his scheme involves tennis robots or tennis demons. We learn that the ancient Mesopotamians actually practiced a mythical art of early tennis that bridged our world with the spirit world, and then the bad guy would invite our heroes to a tennis tournament where they would have to sabotage the tennis-themed machine of doom.
Fast & Furious is like that but with cars. Thank God the villains in this story base their operations around fast cars going vroom and outracing the other cars. It would be disappointing if suddenly the bad guy was like…a chef. Where’s Soma Yukihira when you need him?

Fast 6 is the last film directed by Justin Lin until F9, and the penultimate movie to star Paul Walker before his tragic death. It takes place in the aftermath of Fast 5, with Dominic now living with Elena Neves (Elsa Pataky) from the prior film. Brian and Mia have a child now so Brian and Dom can get into cute arguments about what kind of brand the kid is going to drive when they get older. We also see the return of Rock “The Dwayne” Johnson as Hobbs, because this film needed to have that really awkwardly shot scene at the end.
You know the one I’m talking about, where The Rock looks like he’s talking to an infant cosplaying Vin Diesel.

The crew is living their lives peacefully when Hobbs shows up to propose a job. There’s a group of terrorists terrorizing London and wouldn’t you guess it, they’re really good with race cars. This group is being led by Owen Shaw (Luke Evans). But now that Dominic and his family are safely secured in countries with no extradition treaty, how is Hobbs going to get their help? Well he points out that Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) is part of the crew.
Shaw is searching for the parts to a “nightshade device” which is a fancy term for a big EMP capable of shutting down all power in an affected area, thus ensuring military victory for whoever uses it. The device surprisingly is not related to race cars, nor is it strapped to a race car. But they are using race cars to move the parts. Dom surprisingly accepts the deal in return for pardons, which is funny because his last attempt at a pardon didn’t go so well.

Fast & Furious feels more like a video game with every iteration. I will say F6 is a breath of fresh air from F5, where racing wasn’t really a big focus. Here there’s a few breaks between the main plot points where the characters are like “hey let’s have a race.” They steal cop cars and are like “hey let’s have a race.” Dom shows up to the street race to remind Letty why the two of them are soulmates, and it’s pretty cute seeing Letty fall in love with Dom all over again. There’s a video game-tier boss battle against a tank where Dom jettisons himself across a really high up bridge to save Letty before she falls.
And then it all culminates in a race against a giant plane that eventually is engulfed in flames and explodes so Dom could drive a fast car out at the last second. Gal Gadot gets her dignified death throwing herself out of a fast moving vehicle while shooting the bad guy in the face to save her love before drifting off into the darkness. I’m not entirely sure she’s dead because we were also confident that Letty had died, and I know Han Lue’s death in Tokyo Drift was a fakeout. Maybe Gal Gadot will be back to still be a terrible actor.

The movie also introduces Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw who I already know from the existence of Hobbs & Shaw will eventually come around to work for the good guys. Gee, villains who eventually work for the good guys? Like I said, this is all a big western anime.
