It was Agatha all along. (Spoilers?)
It’s been three years since WandaVision and looking back on that it’s impressive how quickly the Marvel Cinematic Universe collapsed all things considered. WandaVision came out at a time when people were kinda excited about the idea of spinoff TV shows filling the gaps between movies. Nowadays it’s seen as more of a chore. Loki Season 2 was great, What If…? Season 2 was certainly entertaining, and I haven’t seen Echo. Secret Invasion was horrible dogshit that Marvel seems keen on forgetting.
But it’s been three years since WandaVision and that means it’s finally time to catch up with Agatha who we kinda knew since the show aired would only be out of the MCU until Marvel needed to drag her out again. What I didn’t expect is that Kathryn Hahn would appear butt-ass naked with full backal nudity on Disney+. It’s an interesting development given the predecessor show WandaVision was so prudish that it cut a cameo from Dr. Strange because the studio didn’t want a white man teaching a woman how to use magic.

On to the show. Agatha has spent the last three years in a fictional sitcom of her own, believing herself to be Agnes O’Connor, a crime-noir detective. Agatha’s world comes crashing down when Wanda dies and some kid (Joe Locke) breaks into her house and lifts the spell on her in the process. We never actually see Wanda’s face because Elizabeth Olsen has better things to do with her time than show up for a few minutes for a cameo. Now on to the bigger problem; Agatha still doesn’t have her magic.
And the only way to get her magic back is to travel the mythical Witches’ Road, and to do that Agatha needs to form a coven. And so we get the main cast made up of some of my favorite people in the world. Of course I’m talking about Aubrey Plaza who plays Rio Vidal and engages in a fight with Agatha that is equal parts violence and foreplay. Sasheer Zamata plays Jennifer Kale, who you may recognize from her role as the principal in Yoga Hosers. Just kidding, nobody watched Yoga Hosers. Ali Ahn is here as Alice Wu-Gulliver…sure. And Patti LuPone plays Lilia Caldru.

And of course we have the ever lovely Kitty Foreman, I mean Debra Jo Rupp, as Sharon Davis who is part of the coven anyway despite being definitely not a witch. That we’re aware of.
The first two episodes introduce some intrigue to the show, foremost the mystery of why Teen has been hexed so nobody can understand his name or backstory. The main villains of the story are set up as the Salem’s Seven who will no doubt be further explained on as time goes by. If you don’t know anything about them from the comics as I don’t, it’s not hard to understand “these witches are extra bad.” Given their names in the credits, I’m guessing they can transform into animals. Maybe the Salem Seven are good, given Agatha is evil.

My thoughts? It’s enjoyable enough. Agatha All Along will be a better show for how distant it is from the rest of the MCU, by which I mean how little it is used as a vehicle for advertising upcoming shows/movies. And it seems pretty well segregated for the time being, although that’s what we thought about the first couple episodes of WandaVision. The inclusion of bare woman ass for comedic effect and the recent turnaround in the MCU might be a sign of good things to come with this franchise. Possibly.
I’ll see you all when the series concludes in October.
