Finally a child companion.
Eye For An Eye is a fantastic movie. Back in 2022 it was the directorial debut of Bingjia Yang who has since gone on to direct Fight Against Evil 2 and now Eye For An Eye 2. The sequel sees the return of Cheng Xiazi (Miao Xie), a blind swordsman and bounty hunter who goes around beating ass, getting drunk, and killing bad guys. He’s not perfect, but he is indeed a bad ass.
Eye for an Eye 2 has everything you could want out of a sequel to a blind swordsman movie, by which I mean a little girl possibly inventing the suicide bomber vest in ancient China. I’m kidding, but that does happen. Blind Cheng is in fact still blind and still named Cheng, and does indeed still go around taking bounties and being really good at his job. At least until one day the fire nation attacks.

I’m just kidding, but there is a rather graphic scene where a small boy is trampled by several horses. It’s very clearly a mannequin but you just gotta play along with it. The little boy’s sister is Zhang Xiaoyu played by the adorable Enyou Yang. Zhang attempts to enlist Cheng’s help in avenging her brother’s death. And when he refuses to kill the man for her, she tags along as his unwanted companion until he finally accepts her and agrees to train her in the art of kicking ass.
Being a sequel to a blind swordsman movie, the stakes naturally had to be upped for this one. The fight scenes aren’t quite as large as the first movie, but they do feel more cinematic. Until the finale of course. There’s a one on two fight early on in the film on a fishing dock. Then Cheng goes up against a dude who dual wields swords packed with saltpeter that turn into flaming swords of fire. It’s cool as hell.

This movie is beautifully shot with fantastic scenes and sets that feel right out of the time period. It is also relentlessly brutal in the fight scenes with people having their limbs broken in very violent sequences. For a very small child, Zhang gets the crap kicked out of her several times over the course of the movie. The only disappointing part of Eye For An Eye 2 is that the director has made it pretty clear that this is the last movie in what probably had a few good movies left in it.
But I did find the movie charming and the fight scenes better than the first. I don’t have much to say about Eye For An Eye 2 because it’s a very simple movie at heart. Blind swordsman meets child companion and trains her to be a fighter. Also she’s not beating up any adults, don’t worry about that.
