Make Clayface do it. (Spoilers)
I’m cryin’. Creature Commandos is a fantastic show and an excellent starter for the DC Universe. James Gunn successfully made Suicide Squad 3 without technically making Suicide Squad 3, combining characters we know, a strong new cast, and some heart-pulling moments combined with the funny to make an overall excellent first season. And while it feels like not a whole lot got accomplished and some important plot lines were wrapped up way too fast, the show has been greenlit for a Season 2.
As I said in my prior review, who thought we’d be feeling feelings for Weasel of all characters? The pitch that Weasel killed 28 children feels like Gunn threw it into The Suicide Squad as a throwaway joke. In fact Weasel as a whole felt like a throwaway character in The Suicide Squad, since his whole presence is for the punchline of “didn’t anyone check to see if he could swim” for the decoy crew meant to throw off the audience in the opening act.
The seasonal story was quite a series of twists and turns and red herrings. The team is sent to protect Princess Ilana from threat of assassination by Circe, only to learn that Circe was actually on the right side of the story and was only trying to prevent Princess Ilana from bringing about the end of the world. Only Circe was in cahoots with Clayface who was impersonating the professor who provided validation for Circe’s claim. Only the professor was actually correct and Princess Ilana sent Clayface to kill her and impersonate her to make her story look fake.
What a twist! Are we sure James Gunn wrote this and not Mr. Manoj himself?
I have a few questions for season 2 of Suicide Squad. Is Clayface dead? He seems pretty dead in the finale but you never know with a guy like Clayface. We know Clayface is slated to come back in the DCU because there is a Clayface film slated for 2026. It also stands that there are several Clayfaces in the DC Universe, so it’s also entirely possible that this Clayface is dead and there are others still out and about in Gunn’s version. There might even be more here than in the DC Comics.
Presumably Rick Flag won’t be back in a major role in season 2, now that The Bride is the leader of the crew. He is already set up to be in Peacemaker Season 2 and Superman, so this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Frank Grillo in the DCU. It is disappointing that we know so much about the DC and Marvel movie slates that we know for sure which characters aren’t going to die because they already have future films lined up.
I was not surprised that Frankenstein survived being shot numerous times in the season finale, after all we got a whole montage of The Bride attempting and failing to kill him despite incredibly violent encounters over centuries. I hope Frankenstein has a much lesser role in season 2. He’s a gimmick that got annoying fast. It’s great to see King Shark back and of course GI Robot rebuilt as people theorized since his untimely death. The season 2 crew also now includes Nosferata and Khalis.
Still, if there’s one thing Gunn has shown to be great at between DC and Marvel, it’s getting the audience to care deeply about characters they probably didn’t even know existed before they stepped into the theater. Or turned on Max. Maybe it’s because we have another six months of waiting until the DCU kicks off with its feature length film, but Creature Commandos left me interested. Not “I can’t wait” excited, but interested. I’m hopefully optimistic about Gunn not screwing this up.
And then we get Peacemaker Season 2. Oh boy!
